Temporary Visa Options

Prospective Marriage Visa

This is a temporary visa for the purpose of bringing your fiancé to Australia to marry. This visa can be viewed as a preliminary step toward a permanent spouse visa.

A person is eligible for this visa if they have met their intended spouse at least once and have a genuine intention to marry. The general requirements for the Prospective Marriage Visa are:
  • You must be sponsored by:
    • an Australian citizen
    • Australian Permanent Resident or
    • an eligible New Zealand citizen;
  • You must be both free to marry, and of a marriageable age;
  • You genuinely intend to live with your intended spouse as husband and wife; and
  • You must meet health and character requirements.

A Prospective Marriage Visa is a temporary visa and is valid for 9 months from the date of grant, during which time, you must enter Australia and marry your fiancé/sponsor.

Once you are married you become eligible to apply for an Onshore Spouse Visa.
Refusal of a Prospective Marriage Visa gives rise to a right to review at the Migration Review Tribunal.
