New Zealand Citizens

New Zealand citizens can generally live and work in Australia for as long as they like. When you enter Australia, you will be granted a Special Category Visa (provided you meet general health and character requirements). This allows you to stay in Australia for as long as you are a New Zealand citizen.

Your rights in Australia depend on the date of your arrival. If you were in Australia on 26 February 2001, you are generally treated as a permanent resident of Australia. If you arrived on, or after 27 February 2001 you are not an Australian permanent resident. However, you are still entitled to live and work in Australia, but cannot access social security benefits.

New Zealand citizens who are holders of Special Category Visas are able to sponsor their spouses and dependent children for a visa to Australia.

If you are a New Zealand citizen and wish to become an Australian permanent resident, you must make an application for a mainstream visa under the most appropriate category.
