Kim has completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative
Development and International Relations, as well as a Bachelor of Laws
from the
University
of New South Wales, and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the
Australian National University. Kim also has a keen interest in political and social theory
and the nexus between these two disciplines and law.
Kim has long been passionate about social justice issues and is
thrilled to have had the opportunity to break the traditional law firm
mould by establishing Advocate Immigration Lawyers & Agents in
partnership with other like-minded people.
Prior to her admission as a legal practitioner to the Supreme
Court of NSW, Kim undertook her practical legal training on a volunteer
basis with the Refugee Advice & Casework Service (RACS), and the
HIV/AIDS Legal Centre (HALC). Kim continues her associate with both
legal centres and provides advice to asylum-seekers at RACS free evening
advice sessions.
Following her admission as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of
NSW, Kim commenced her career in private practice; working at small
firms which specialized in immigration and criminal law. Kim then took a
position as a solicitor/caseworker with the Immigration Advice and
Rights Centre (IARC), the largest specialist immigration law community
legal centre in
Australia.
During her time at IARC, Kim supervised the provision of
face-to-face immigration advice by volunteer migration agents/lawyers at
IARC’s free evening advice sessions; provided immigration advice via
IARC’s free telephone advice service; as well as ongoing casework for
clients with diverse migration matters ranging from visa cancellation,
review tribunal matters, family and partner migration matters, health
issues, complex citizenship and character issues, through to refugee and
humanitarian matters. Whilst at IARC Kim also published numerous
articles on migration law issues and conducted community education
seminars aimed at educating various groups within the community about
changes to immigration law and the impact on their situation. Kim is
committed to continuing her involvement with IARC and volunteers at
their free evening advice sessions.
As an immigration lawyer whose experience spans corporate and
community practice Kim brings a unique mix of migration legal experience
to Advocate Immigration Lawyers & Agents. Kim’s previous experience in
both the private and community sectors has ensured that she has an
extremely broad knowledge of migration law dealing with matters as
diverse as business migration through to family, detention, deportation
and removal, refugee and humanitarian migration, and review before
tribunals (Migration Review Tribunal, Refugee Review Tribunal,
Administrative Appeals Tribunal) and courts.
Kim has also developed a keen interest and expertise in business
migration as well as character issues, visa cancellation and judicial
review under Australian immigration law. Kim was recently
interviewed by ABC Radio National and
quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald, discussing the character
provisions under migration law in the wake of the decision by the
Minister for Immigration & Citizenship to cancel Dr. Mohammed Haneef's
visa.
